Despite the name, serverless computing absolutely involves servers. The "serverless" label means that you, the developer, do not manage those servers. The cloud provider handles provisioning, scaling, patching, and maintenance. You write code; they run it.

How Serverless Works

In traditional hosting, you rent or manage a server that runs 24/7, whether or not anyone is using your application. You pay for the server regardless of traffic, and you are responsible for keeping it updated, secure, and appropriately sized.

In serverless computing, your code runs in response to events (HTTP requests, file uploads, database changes, scheduled triggers). The cloud provider creates a temporary execution environment, runs your code, and then releases the resources. You pay only for the actual compute time consumed.

Key Characteristics

Auto-scaling. Serverless platforms scale from zero to thousands of concurrent executions automatically. No capacity planning required.

Pay-per-use. You are billed for the milliseconds your code runs, not for idle time. An application with no traffic costs nothing.

No server management. No operating system patches, no security updates, no disk space monitoring. The provider handles everything below the application layer.

Event-driven. Functions execute in response to specific triggers rather than running continuously.

  • Google Cloud Functions -- Google's serverless offering
  • Azure Functions -- Microsoft's equivalent
  • Cloudflare Workers -- Edge-based serverless running close to users globally

Trade-offs

Cold starts. When a function has not been called recently, the first invocation may take extra time as the platform creates a new execution environment. This can be mitigated through prewarming strategies.

Execution time limits. Most serverless platforms impose maximum execution times (15 minutes for AWS Lambda). Long-running processes need different architectures.

Vendor lock-in. Serverless applications often depend on provider-specific services, making migration between providers more complex.

Debugging complexity. Distributed functions are harder to debug than monolithic applications running on a single server.

State management. Serverless functions are stateless by design. Any persistent data must be stored externally in databases, caches, or object storage.

When to Use Serverless

Serverless works well for: APIs and web applications with variable traffic, event processing and data pipelines, scheduled tasks and cron jobs, and prototypes that need to launch quickly without infrastructure setup.

Serverless may not be ideal for: applications with consistent high traffic (where reserved capacity is cheaper), workloads requiring persistent connections, and teams without experience in distributed systems.

Serverless computing removes infrastructure management from the developer's responsibilities, enabling teams to focus on application logic. It is not universally superior to traditional hosting but offers compelling advantages for many workload patterns, particularly applications with variable traffic and teams that want to minimize operational overhead.
